Why Shopify Detox Scan exists and how the review works

WHY THIS EXISTS

Working does not mean stable.

A lot of Shopify stores do not become messy all at once. They accumulate old theme edits, app embeds, duplicate scripts, subscription widgets, cart drawer customizations, review widgets, tracking pixels, page builders, abandoned experiments, and emergency fixes over time.

The warning sign is not always a broken homepage. Sometimes it is a slower PDP, a cart button that spins too long, a subscription option that behaves differently on mobile, duplicated analytics, review widgets loading late, or a team that says "don't touch that file."

Shopify Detox Scan is the low-commitment first step before a deeper audit, cleanup sprint, or reliability plan.

HOW THE REVIEW WORKS

Not just a generic scanner export.

Shopify Detox Scan combines an automated external scan that tests the public storefront with senior Shopify review.

The scanner collects cart API probes, product truth checks, network and console evidence, app fingerprints, CrUX field data, WCAG 2.2 A/AA signals, keyboard and responsive-state evidence, and region-verified consent/privacy behavior.

Then I review the findings in my internal dashboard, separate what matters from what is noise, and generate a practical report. The goal is not to overwhelm you with every warning. The goal is to tell you what deserves action, what can wait, and what needs deeper review.

Potential fixes

A Real Clean-Up on Multiple Fronts

The Detox Scan report is the diagnostic first step. When it surfaces real risk, the follow-up work may be a focused cleanup sprint, a deeper Shopify Rehab, or a reliability plan. These are the kinds of storefront problems I can often help untangle after the report shows where the risk actually lives.

Revenue flow

Cart, PDP, and subscription fixes

Add-to-cart and cart drawer behavior

Fixes may include cart drawers that do not refresh, cart counts that stay stale, checkout buttons that behave inconsistently, AJAX cart code that breaks under app pressure, or custom properties and discount logic that fail in the handoff.

This can involve theme code, cart scripts, app embeds, Rebuy Smart Cart, UpCart, bundles, free-gift logic, custom cart drawers, or other revenue-flow customizations.

Subscription purchase flow issues

I can potentially help debug Subscribe & Save options turning into one-time purchases, selling plan data getting lost between PDP and cart, subscription widgets conflicting with cart drawers, or upsell and discount logic breaking subscription products.

Common stacks may include Skio, Recharge, Appstle, Loop, Seal Subscriptions, Shopify Subscriptions, and theme-controlled selling plan inputs.

Storefront weight

App, script, and tracking cleanup

Old app code and script bloat

Follow-up cleanup may include removing abandoned app snippets, reducing duplicate embeds, untangling inline scripts, cleaning up old page-builder artifacts, and making revenue-critical templates easier to maintain.

Common systems include Klaviyo, Attentive, Postscript, Omnisend, Yotpo, Okendo, Judge.me, Loox, Gorgias, Rebuy, UpCart, Replo, Shogun, PageFly, Triple Whale, Northbeam, Elevar, Hotjar, and Microsoft Clarity.

Tracking clutter and duplicate pixels

I can help identify and clean up obvious theme-level tracking clutter, duplicated snippets, overlapping tag-manager installs, and stale pixel code that continues loading after the team thinks an app or experiment is gone.

Full analytics event validation is a deeper scope, but the report can point to when tracking deserves that closer look.

Page weight and maintenance drag

Potential fixes may include trimming unnecessary scripts, reducing heavy assets where practical, cleaning up theme cruft, and separating real performance work from warnings that do not meaningfully affect shoppers.

Risk signals

Visible breakage and theme debt cleanup

JavaScript errors and failed storefront requests

I can potentially trace product-page errors, broken selectors, missing scripts, abandoned app URLs, failed requests, and repeated browser warnings back to the theme, app leftovers, or fragile custom code.

Obvious UX and accessibility friction

Follow-up work may include fixing unlabeled controls, missing alt text, keyboard and focus failures, contrast issues, sticky overlap, reflow problems, or touch targets that are hard to use.

Consent and privacy behavior

The scan compares consent before a choice, after reject or accept, and after reload in region-verified contexts. It also checks privacy links, third-party data surfaces, and redacted sensitive values in request URLs.

Theme debt from too many hands

Cleanup can mean removing duplicate cart drawers, abandoned containers, staging strings, console logs, outdated snippets, and other "why is this here?" code left behind by agencies, apps, experiments, or rushed fixes.

COMMON APP STACKS

The problem is usually not one app. It is how everything overlaps.

Most established Shopify stores need apps. The mess usually starts when too many tools are layered into the storefront over time without anyone owning the full picture.

A subscription widget may need to work with a cart drawer. A cart drawer may need to work with an upsell engine. Reviews may inject into the PDP after load. Email and SMS tools may add forms, tracking, and popups. Analytics tools may fire from both theme scripts and tag managers. Page builders may leave behind old sections or scripts.

Shopify Detox Scan looks for visible overlap between the systems that commonly affect revenue flow and maintainability.

Having these apps is not automatically a problem. Many are excellent tools. The risk comes from how they are implemented, whether old code was removed, and whether multiple systems are fighting over the same storefront behavior.

REAL-WORLD SYMPTOMS

The kinds of issues that usually mean "someone should look closer."

Most messy storefronts do not fail all at once. Small issues pile up across apps, cart logic, tracking, subscriptions, and theme edits until the board starts to look like this.

REQUEST

Request a Shopify Detox Scan

Send the store URL and a short note about what feels fragile, slow, risky, or confusing. I will review it and let you know whether Shopify Detox Scan is a good fit.

Normally, the scan is $495. For launch, I am waiving the fee for the first 10 founding stores in exchange for permission to publish anonymized findings as a field note and, if you are happy with the report, a short testimonial.

Store names are never published without permission. 10 of 10 slots available.

No outsourced follow-up. No pressure sequence. If it is not a fit, I will say so directly.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you need Shopify admin access?

No. Shopify Detox Scan starts as an external storefront scan. No app install, admin login, or code change is needed for the scan. If deeper access is needed later, that would be part of a separate Shopify Rehab.

Is this a full code audit?

No. It is an external scan plus senior review. It tests the public storefront, flags visible risk signals, and recommends whether a deeper private codebase review is worth doing.

Will this change anything on my store?

No. The Detox Scan does not modify the store. It collects evidence from the public storefront and turns that evidence into a reviewed report.

What does the scan actually test?

It tests public storefront signals: subscription cart behavior, product truth, network and console evidence, app leftovers, duplicate tracking, CrUX field data, accessibility signals, consent behavior, privacy hygiene, and theme intelligence.

Does this certify accessibility or privacy compliance?

No. Accessibility findings are automated WCAG 2.2 A/AA signals, not a conformance certification. Consent and privacy findings describe observed technical behavior, not legal advice or a GDPR, CCPA, or other compliance determination.

Is this a Lighthouse or PageSpeed audit?

No. The scan uses real-user CrUX field data where available, then combines it with direct storefront evidence from the browser instead of handing over a synthetic scorecard.

Can you really see subscription problems from outside?

Yes. Shopify's cart API is public, so the scan can add a subscription item to a throwaway cart and verify whether the selling plan survives in the cart response.

Can you review stores using Skio, Recharge, Rebuy, Klaviyo, Yotpo, Okendo, or similar apps?

Yes, depending on how they are implemented. Detox Scan can identify visible storefront clues and risk signals for common Shopify app stacks. Deeper fixes may require theme, app, or admin access as part of a separate audit or cleanup sprint.

Is this for headless Shopify?

No. This offer is focused on Shopify Online Store 2.0/theme-based storefronts, not Hydrogen, headless, or custom React storefronts.

What happens after the report?

You may need nothing, a small cleanup, a deeper Shopify Rehab, a Cleanup Sprint, or ongoing Reliability Plan support. The report recommends the next responsible step.

How much does the Detox Scan cost?

Normally $495. Right now I'm waiving the fee for the first 10 founding stores in exchange for permission to use anonymized findings as a field note and a short testimonial if the report is useful. After the founding spots fill, the scan is $495.

What's the catch with the free founding scan?

There isn't one, but there is a trade: I'm building the public track record for a new service, so founding scans are exchanged for anonymized write-up permission and honest feedback. The report itself is the same either way, and store names are never published without permission.

Do you outsource the review?

No. Storefront Detox is direct senior Shopify review handled by me.

Not sure you need a scan?

Paste your store URL and I'll take a quick look — then tell you honestly whether a Detox Scan is worth it. No report, no charge, one straight answer.
